It was just announced that both Marvel and DC have banned their character artists from selling Marvel or DC style NFTs. They want to keep the rights for their characters in the NFT world for themselves and with this they give us reason to speculate on what will come out in the future in terms of NFTs around Marvel and DC.
Marvel and DC NFTs
Marvel has already made their first steps into the NFT market. Indeed, in August of this year, they already released their first collection around their world-famous character Spider-Man. Not long later, they came out with their second collection, this time around the character Captain America.
Now that they have banned their artists from releasing NFTs around their work at Marvel, it seems inevitable that many more Marvel NFT collections will follow. It seems that Marvel will be paying their artists a portion of the NFT proceeds though, probably in part because of the significant controversy over salaries in Hollywood earlier this year.
Influential parties in the NFT industry
Marvel is obviously not the first hugely influential party in the NFT industry, but it is a very important one. In fact, Marvel is one of the largest and most influential companies in the entertainment industry. They accounted for many of the best performing films ever made, such as Avengers Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home. This December, Spider-Man: No Way Home will also be released, possibly followed by an exclusive NFT collection.
Earlier this year, Visa also “interfered” with NFTs, for example, when they purchased Crypto Punk #7610 for a whopping $150,000.
The hype surrounding NFTs seems to be waning a bit recently. Trading volume on OpenSea actually decreased by as much as 50% over the past month. So now is the time for influential parties to participate in the NFT market, as this can help to reduce the hype.
